1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair: Milan Young
Past exhibition
Overview
Milan Young's new solo booth, titled 'Third Stone From the Sun', takes inspiration from the Jimi Hendrix song, of the same name. As Hendrix reflects on his place in the universe in the song, Young reflects through her art on the past year of her life and the challenges faced during her journey.
GJG will be showcasing the works of Milan Young at our booth at 1-54 Contemporary African Art fair this week. Young is an emerging African-American artist whose dynamic and introspective work is gaining significant recognition in the contemporary art world. Her latest solo exhibtion, 'Third Stone from the Sun', takes inspiration from the Jimi Hendrix song of the same name. Just as Hendrix reflects on his place in the universe, Young uses this platform to reflect on her own life, particularly the challenges she faced during her recent journey. This exhibition marks Young's first appearance at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.
Young’s art delves into deep and complex themes such as heritage, the history of slavery, and the intergenerational trauma that comes with it. Her work carries a duality, existing in a state of paradox where chaos and premeditation meet. This fusion of raw, spontaneous expression with carefully considered themes is central to her practice. As an abstract expressionist, she embraces the role of chance in her artistic process, but beneath the layers of her work is a controlled exploration of colour theory and emotional depth. Her paintings are notable for their hidden layers, suggesting more than what is initially seen, which parallels the artist's personal exploration of trauma and identity. Childhood trauma is a significant influence, with her emotional state at the time of creation often dictating the direction of her work.
Young's works will be on display at GJG's booth, EMB2 at 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair from the 10th - 13th of October.
