Loosely inspired by Salvador Dalí’s surrealist object ‘Lobster Telephone’, this painting portrays a laughing girl in a sparkly dress eyeing a claw, perching on a red table covered in leftovers. The pictorial frame seems to contain detail belonging to a wider scenario: is she alone or surrounded by other people? Is the scene taking place during or after the party? At once homely and opulent, ‘Lobster’ also conceals a further hidden reference. In the top-right corner rests a fragment of Utagawa Kunisada’s ‘The Seventh Month: Waiting for the Moon.’ The original painting depicts, once again, three women eating crab on the veranda at night - an equally happy, mischievous image.
