‘Seeking a Self’ depicts Hazell’s teenage son, battling with an identity crisis, typical of adolescence. Not sure of who he was or what he wanted, the frightened boy is portrayed with his fists up to his mouth and the eyes wide open - a dramatic expedient used to lead the viewer to immediately understand the mental state of the protagonist. Here too recurs the theme of ‘Embracing and Repelling’, specifically relating to the artist’s feelings towards her son’s troubled path: on the one hand the motherly unconditional love, on the other the struggles and sacrifices involved in single-handedly raising two children.
