Cherry Aribisala's work primarily explores mental health, anxiety, emotional experiences, fragility and the acceptance of oneself through the juxtaposition of contemporary pop aesthetic. The ‘In Bloom’ series is part of Aribisala's most recent body of work ‘IF WORDS WERE FLOWERS’, of which she states: “The flatness or comic style evokes a disconnect form of reality by allowing me to freely translate the world around me into clearly sectioned off outlines or parts. The paintings and imagery I create give me a level of control that I don’t feel outside of art.”

Aribisala previously used her chromatic palette to point towards a specific emotion, and sees floral motifs as a natural progression from colour as a means of communication. These flowers, depicted from life, allow for visually impactful compositions that keep the viewer’s gaze constantly in motion. Yet, they also conceal an important symbolism. They are metaphors of overwhelming feelings, of the many ambitions that pressure her on a daily basis. Such an understanding of flowers is counterposed to the bright aesthetic in which they are painted and to the traditionally positive conception of flora in the arts.
