‘Webweaver’ is the two-dimensional translation of Bennett’s recent exploration of textile techniques. Expanding to multiple media, Bennett built a loom out of natural elements, while also producing a set of weavings made up of found wool, dried legumes, and vines. The work specifically focuses on the practical and metaphorical dichotomies involved in the process of weaving: “In weaving, one learns the contradictions of materials and in doing so, the contradictions of oneself.” (Julia Bennett).
Wool can be both soft and strong, and even fragile blades of grass, when interlaced with others, can carry the heaviest of loads. In watching this tattered web, internal connections are made, creating an intersection with viewer and artist, weaving a web that extends beyond the boundaries of our bodies.
