Fragmented reality and surrealism intertwine on the vibrant canvases of Jade Ching-yuk Ng. The interplay of modern narratives, ancient mythology, and art historical references from de Chirico to de Lempicka move throughout these works, revealing many possible readings and interpretations.
Surrounded by jewel-coloured prisms and holding up a bubble of her own tears, the heroine of ‘I Wish my Bubbly Tears Could Exchange your Entire Universe’ is suspended in an open-ended narrative. While tears may engender sadness in an initial reading, to the artist, they represent fluidity. Mirroring the shape of the moon, these tears may transform from a solid buble into a new form in the universe. Symbolic imagery reveals parts of the story, but viewers are invited to interpret the artist’s oeuvre through their own prism of imagination.
